Experimental Studies of Unbound Neutron-rich Nuclei

The three-body description of two-neutron halo nuclei relies on the two-body interactions between the constituents. In order to provide constraints on calculations devoted to 14 Be and 17 B, the neutron unbound states of 13 Be and 16 B have been investigated by one-proton knockout. The experimental techniques and results are discussed here.

Study of Unbound Nuclei through Using Final-state Interactions

Introduction In two experiments [1,2] performed at the NSCL, the interactions in the unbound system Li+n produced in breakup reactions of O have been explored via the final-state interactions. As a check these experiments also included the final system He+n; and it was demonstrated that the experiments correctly reproduced the p-wave resonance at 0.44 MeV in He,observed only once before in the ...

Investigation of particle-unbound excited states in light nuclei with resonance-decay spectroscopy using a Be beam

Resonance-decay spectroscopy is used to study particle-unbound excited states produced in interactions of E/A=50 MeV Be on polyethylene and carbon targets. The particle-unbound states are produced in a variety of reaction mechanisms ranging from projectile fragmentation to proton-pickup. New proton-decaying excited states are observed in Li (E∗=14.1±0.1 MeV, Γ=207±49 keV) and Be (E∗=20.4±0.1 Me...

Particle Unstable Light Nuclei

Exotic nuclei produced in fragmentation reactions can be used to study nuclei beyond the drip lines. The level structure of these nuclei yields information about disappearing, shifting and emerging shells along the driplines. Light nuclei beyond the neutron dripline (for example He, Li, and Be) and the proton dripline (for example N and F) are used to establish the vanishing of the N = 8 and Z ...

Light Nuclei as Quantized Skyrmions

We consider the rigid body quantization of Skyrmions with topological charges 1 to 8, as approximated by the rational map ansatz. Novel, general expressions for the elements of the inertia tensors, in terms of the approximating rational map, are presented and are used to determine the kinetic energy contribution to the total energy of the ground and excited states of the quantized Skyrmions. Ou...
